After properly introducing the world to Gay Meat last fall with his debut EP ‘Bed of Every,’ new Chicago, IL transplant Karl Kuehn (Museum Mouth, Say Anything, Kississippi) is back with a two song single “Lychee Ice // Not Even Sadness.” Written last summer, Kuehn returns with two songs revealing the joys and despondency that comes with feelings of a certain magnitude.
“Lychee Ice” is a lighthearted jog through places and simple sights that accompany the limitlessness of a sunny day before launching into a chorus built around a feeling. Yes, he may be singing about a vape flavor but of course it’s so much more than that. It’s a sense memory. It’s tongue-in-cheek while being incredibly earnest.
“Not Even Sadness” on the other hand is a slow walk towards pinpointing a mantra. Piano flourishes sit nestled between a leading bassline ushering the listener to a declaration of a chorus that feels like it falls from the sky, “Nothing feels as good in the moment. Not even sadness.” It’s cynical, if not true, but ultimately relatable.
Brett Scott and Alex Thompson are back as co-producers along with Kuehn. This time the trio is accompanied by Richmond, VA music scene veteran Taylor Haag on drums. Brett Scott mixed the songs at BNB Audio in Chapel Hill, NC. And the tracks were mastered by Robin Schmidt (The 1975, Bloc Party, Viagra Boys) at 24-96 Mastering.
